Bengaluru-based seafood supply chain startup Captain Fresh has secured ₹290 crore (around €27 million) in sustainability-linked financing from Switzerland-based impact investor Blue Earth Capital.
The company plans to use the funding to strengthen its global distribution network and scale its presence in international seafood markets.
Funding to Strengthen Global Expansion
Captain Fresh said the newly raised capital will help the company expand its distribution capabilities across global markets.
The startup operates on a B2B business model, supplying seafood to distributors and retailers rather than directly selling to consumers.
During FY2025, the company served nearly 1,300 customers across more than 30 countries, including:
- United States
- European countries
- United Arab Emirates
- India
The company also deals in over 90 seafood species and works with more than 650 suppliers across 35 countries.
Tackling Global Seafood Waste
According to Captain Fresh, nearly 15% of seafood globally is lost or wasted due to inefficiencies in processing and harvesting practices.
A lack of standardisation and operational complexity in the seafood supply chain often leads to unnecessary waste.
Through its technology-driven platform, Captain Fresh aims to reduce these inefficiencies and improve transparency in seafood sourcing.
Building a Digitally Integrated Seafood Supply Chain
Captain Fresh was founded in 2020 by entrepreneur Utham Gowda.
The company is building a multi-species seafood brand ecosystem supported by digital traceability and integrated supply chains.
Its portfolio includes several seafood brands such as:
- CenSea
- Frime
- Koral
- Senecrus
- ChopServe
- Ocean Edge
- Ocean Garden
The company recently expanded its operations by acquiring Spanish tuna processing company Frime, strengthening its international presence.
Focus on Sustainable Seafood
The funding from Blue Earth Capital reflects growing investor interest in sustainable food and agriculture businesses.
Amy Wang, Head of Private Credit at Blue Earth Capital, said the investment supports the goal of promoting sustainably sourced seafood and reducing waste across the supply chain.
She also highlighted that improving efficiency in seafood distribution can help meet the rising global demand for traceable seafood products.
Technology and Traceability
Captain Fresh’s platform focuses on improving supply chain efficiency through technology, data, and vertical integration.
By introducing source-to-shelf traceability, the company aims to create a more transparent and sustainable seafood ecosystem.
According to CEO Utham Gowda, the company sees sustainability not as a compliance requirement but as a long-term value driver for the business.
Conclusion
With the new ₹290 crore sustainability-linked funding, Captain Fresh is strengthening its position as a technology-driven global seafood supply chain platform.
By combining digital traceability, international distribution networks, and sustainability-focused operations, the company aims to transform the traditionally fragmented seafood industry.
As global demand for traceable and sustainable seafood continues to grow, Captain Fresh is positioning itself as a key player in the future of the global seafood market.
